ABOUT US
Progress and Grading
Progress is based on the development of skills and knowledge
and is measured over five steps known as dans. During the
first step, beginner to 1st dan (black belt) the steps are
broken down further into stages known as kyus. There are six
kyu grades each one is designated by a different coloured
belt worn by the practitioner. You should have the
opportunity to take your first grading after approximately 3
months of practice. On average it takes three years from
beginner to black belt.
The Kyu Grading Sequence is as follows:
White......Red...Yellow...Orange...Green...Blue...Brown......Black.
All dan grades, from 1st dan to 5th dan are designated by a
black belt. The grading system ends at 5th dan, but the
learning doesn't.
Grading is awarded on ability, it is therefore possible to
move more than one grade at a time. You should talk to your
club leader about grades and being graded.
