Grading Beyond 5th Dan

The Shotokai College Grading structure begins with the student wearing a white belt. This signifies that the student has not as yet reached a level of skill that would allow assessment to take place. As far as the Shotokai College is concerned they have - no grade. Once they enter the grading system they begin at 6th Kyu and continue to 5th Dan.

The seniors of the College know the criteria for each of these steps they are both set and dynamic.

When appropriate 5th Dans leave the grading system and return to – no grade. This signifies they have reached a level of skill, understanding and value that can no longer be assessed or have labels attached. With many years of hard and diligent practise our journey of learning takes us from - no grade to no grade.
